What is the secret of attraction?

According to the following article, some would view marriage as a transaction or trade-off.
It would seem at times that the cold truth in many cases is simply that men are attracted to beauty or a social perception of beauty that has more to do with Neanderthal behaviour signifying good genes that will produce successful offspring while on the other hand, women are attracted to wealth and status and the promise of security and family commitment.
Does this sound like a trade-off to you and who do you think would dominate? The woman?
I find it disappointing that the woman in question is baffled why anyone would be attracted to a ’plain jane’. Obviously, an engaging personality, humour, wit, intelligence, empathy, integrity and the ability to listen are not considered traits worth aspiring to.
